Entrance Rules for Readers

  • Readers should enter with their own University ID Card.
  • Readers should comply with the rules and regulations of Shandong University Library.
  • Please keep quiet in the library. Electronic devices such as phones and laptops should be set to “silent” mode. Spitting, littering, playing, horseplay,  noises and the like are prohibited in the library.
  • Please keep order in the library. Occupying seats and relocating tables and seats without permission are prohibited. Please remember to take all your belongings before leaving the library.
  • Readers are requested to demonstrate the value of courtesy when borrowing items. Please be careful with the library equipment. Smearing or damaging equipment and property is prohibited. Posting or distributing announcements, pamphlets and flyers in the library are prohibited.
  • In order to maintain an enlightened and pleasant environment, please dress neatly in the library, be polite to others, and make sure not to disturb or distract other readers.
  • Please cooperate with library staffs for inspection and behave politely if the detector alarms when you are passing through the exit.
  • Library is a key fire prevention area. Smoking is prohibited anywhere in the library. Any flammable and explosive materials are not permitted to bring into the library.
  • Please cooperate with library staffs in case of any violations and punishment.

Rules for Borrowing and Returning

  • The University ID Card is the only valid certificate for readers to borrow books.
  • Readers should borrow books from the library in accordance with the library borrowing regulations.
  • When taking books from open-stacks, readers should not change the order of books on bookshelf. Readers who want to borrow books from closed-stacks should search the stacks in the company of library staff and go through borrowing procedures.
  • Visitors should stop for inspection if the detector alarms when they pass through the exit.
  • Readers should check the borrowed books carefully and inform the library staffs if they find any book smeared or tore without a seal marking defacement.
  • Readers can log in "My Library" to check the exact duedate for returning  borrowed book.
  • If readers want to renew a book which is not reserved by others, they can renew it online or at the Service Center with their own University ID Card. Each book can only be renewed once during its borrowing period.
  • Borrowed books expiring during summer or winter vacation are supposed to be returned within 5 days after the new term begins; books expiring in holidays are supposed to be returned on the first day after the holiday.
  • Please be careful with borrowed books and the library's borrowing equipment and abide by the library borrowing regulations. Violations will be punished according to the Measures for Dealing with Violation of Borrowing Regulations.
  • Please feel free to consult the Service Center if you have problems with book borrowing.
  • Special collections cannot be checked out.

Measures for Dealing with Violation of Borrowing Regulations

  • Any borrower who fails to return an expiring item shall be liable to a fine of 0.1 yuan for each day that elapses until the item is returned.
  • Readers are not allowed to check out other books if he or she has overdue books in hand.
  • For any loss of books, reader shall replace with the same edition of the lost books. But for the loss of library's important collections, reader shall compensate at the rate of 2-50 times of the book price (full price of multiple volumes if any fascicule book is lost) depending on the publication year and scarcity of the item.
  • For defacing of any borrowed book or its barcode, the reader shall be criticized and be asked to compensate for the damage if necessary.
  • For theft and damage of books, one shall be banned from borrowing books for three months,be asked to submit written self-criticism, and his misbehavior will be reported to his or her school. Serious cases or one with bad attitude may be reported to relevant departments of the university.

Rules for Reading and Using Special Collections

1. Reading Services
(1) Ancient books that have reprinting, photocopying, copying, electronic edition and digitized versions are no longer available for readers, except for edition researchers.
(2) Readers should make are servation 5 working days in advance if they need to use ancient books without an electronic edition available. Booking hotline: 0531-88361969; Email: sdtsgtcyl@sdu.edu.cn. The staff member will scan the item to obtain the electronic edition and then inform the readers.
(3) Damaged, decayed, out-of-line or other unrepaired documents and special collections which are under repair are not available for readers.
2. Readers who need to use the library's special collections for scientific research and teaching purposes are allowed to take photos of the collection for free. Items available are as follows:
(1) Reference books and photocopies of ancient books in the reading room
(2) All electronic documents provided by the library
(3) Well-preserved books and periodicals of Minguo(1912-1949)
3. If the duplication of an entire ancient book is needed for the university's major project, a request shall be submitted to the Party-Government Meeting of the Library.
4. Large-scale using and copying of the library's special collections for reasons other than teaching and scientific research shall be carried out with a signed agreement and the final decision shall be made by the library's Party-Government Meeting.
5. These regulations shall come into force as of the date of promulgation. In case of any discrepancy with the previous regulations, these regulations shall prevail.
