In order to enable readers to make full use of the digital resources of the library and to access the resources whenever and wherever possible, three options are provided.

1. Off-campus Access System(provided by the library)

Through this system, affiliates of the Shandong University may have off-campus access to most of the digital resources purchased by the library. Only a few subscriptions now are not available off the campus due to some limitations. Staff members and students log in the system with the University unified  identity authentication.

2. VPN(Provided by Informatization Office)

Only for users who hold a salary number or a student ID number.

Since the same Internet authentication system is adopted in the VPN System as in the systems of campus network wired access, dormitory access and Wi-Fi access, the VPN System account is the same as the campus network account.(No additional fees charged)

3. CALIS-CARSI Shibboleth (provided by CALIS Management Center)

Shibboleth is an open source project for SSO (Single Sign On). It is mainly for sharing Web resources on campus and for the user identity joint authentication of application systems among different campuses. Overseas databases generally support the Shibboleth-based real-name login authentication service so as to help university readers directly access these databases off the campus, and there is no need of VPN or Proxy services provided by their universities. Such service has been provided by most overseas universities.

CALIS Management Center, Digital Resource Acquisition Alliance of Chinese Academic Libraries (DRAA) and China Education and Research Network (CERNET) Authentication and Resource Sharing Infrastructure (CARSI) cooperatively launched CALIS-CARSI Shibboleth service (CALIS-CARSI service for short) based on the CERNET CARSI project, aiming to provide identity authentication service that allows library users in Chinese universities to get off-campus access to commercial databases by real-name login. 

The databases joining the CALIS-CARSI are as follows: IEEE/IET(IEL), Web of Science, Nature, and RSC。
