Generally speaking, books are put in stacks in accordance with discipline classifications. Some stacks only contain certain types of books. In any case, only when readers know about book classification and the classification of the book they want, can they locate the book in stacks.
The taxonomy used in our library currently is Chinese Library Classification. Books are divided into 22 subclasses and every subclass is subdivided according to different classification criteria, so as to form a wide range of interconnected divisions of multi-levels and multi-hierarchies. In order to mark divisions conveniently, each of them is identified by a group of numbers.
The text description of divisions is called division name，and the number is called cutter number. Book classification is to give a book a proper number according to the nature of that book—that is, the cutter number, and then allocate it a distinction number belonging to the same type of books—the book number. Cutter number and book number constitute the call number of that book. Taking F270/*1344、I247.5/414.2-2、TN710/*086 for example, the part before “/” is cutter number and the part after “/” is book number. A call number is not only the basis of the shelving but also the basis for readers to locate the book they need in stacks.

Yes, affiliates of the university have access to the electronic resources of the library when they are off campus. Readers could click the option “Off-campus Access to Electronic Resources” on the homepage of the library to enter this system. Users can login to this system by using university ID card account and university ID card query password. Account registration is not needed.
In order to make the best use of the digital resources of the library and satisfy our readers’needs of accessing these resources without limitation of time and spaces, three access modes are available currently:
1. Off-campus Access System (provided by the library)
Through this system, affiliates of our university can have access to most of the digital resources officially subscribed by our library outside the campus network. But due to some restrictions, a few resources are not available in this way.
2. VPN (provided by Informatization Office)
This mode is only for users having salary number or student number of Shandong University.
3. CALIS-CARSI Shibboleth service (provided by CALIS Management Center)
Shibboleth is an open source project designed for Single Sign On(SSO). Shibboleth is mainly applied to the Web resource sharing on campus and user identity joint authentication for inter-campus application system. Foreign databases generally support real-name login authentication service based on Shibboleth, which allows university readers to directly login and access these databases with real names. In this way, it is not necessary for readers to use VPN or Proxy service offered by their universities. Most foreign institutions of higher learning have provided this service.
The VPN system shares the same username and password with other Internet access methods of our university to connect to the campus network, and it has the same authentication Internet system as the campus wired network, the student dormitory network and the wireless Wi-Fi (without extra charge).

(1) During the use of electronic resources, some readers may have behaviors of violating download rules, and are punished by the publishers. (2) You are not allowed to give your account and password to non-affiliates, or you shall take responsibility for all the consequences caused. To avoid several people using the same account to login, this system allows users to login to their account on only one computer in the same time period. If you disclose your own account, you may not normally login to the system.
The Information Consultation Service Department of Shandong University Library can provide academic achievements and citation retrieval certificates to the affiliates and non-affiliates of the university.
The affiliates and non-affiliates of Shandong University can go to the Information Consultation Service Department on Central campus, Qianfoshan Campus and Baotuquan Campus to handle relative procedures.
